A tool to aggregate asset data for faster issue resolution.
Product discovery.
Background
The client, a global leader in cement and mining equipment, was shifting from a hardware-centric model to a services-and-insights ecosystem, a platform where plants could benchmark performance and receive asset recommendations. However, this ambition relied on high-fidelity data that could explain why an asset behaved a certain way, not just that it did.
While the platform could already ingest automated sensor data, sensors cannot capture what an operator sees, decides, or executes. That critical layer of context such as incidents, observations, and maintenance actions, lived in paper logbooks or stayed in people’s heads.
Service technicians work in demanding, high-mobility settings and consequently, manual logging was slow, inconsistent, and unstructured, resulting in data that was nearly unusable for downstream analysis and highly vulnerable to loss during shift changes.
This led to the insight that reorganized the entire project: machine data provides the baseline, but only production personnel possess the context that explains it. Our mandate was to capture tacit operator knowledge at the exact moment and context of creation, in a structured format the platform could immediately compute. The solution had to be effortless for a user with their hands full, yet clean enough for backend data science.
Solution
A concept for a mobile-first solution was developed, organized around four core jobs-to-be-done, each striking a balance between user value and data integrity:
Resilient Field Logging: Integrated voice-to-text and smart input for hands-full, gloved moments, alongside standard keyboard inputs for quieter environments. Entries are strictly scoped to specific assets, ensuring data is structured at the point of capture rather than cleaned up later.
Knowledge Retrieval: Created a single, searchable repository to replace scattered paper records. Operators can use barcode scanning to instantly pull up an asset's complete history while standing directly in front of it during a tour.
Status Tracking: Introduced a pragmatic, honest taxonomy (Out of Control / Fixed for Now / Resolved) that mirrors real operator mental models. This transparency encourages truthful, accurate logging rather than forced compliance.
Shift Summaries: The logbook automatically synthesizes the previous day's key takeaways, action items, and variables for plant managers, streamlining cross-shift handovers. By returning time to managers during their scarcest morning hour, we eliminated the communication gaps where critical knowledge used to disappear.
Impact
This initiative delivered the critical data foundation required to make the client's long-term insights platform viable, converting a high-level corporate ambition into a concrete, buildable roadmap.
For Plant Managers: It transformed end-of-shift paperwork into a live, searchable, and summarized asset view, enabling faster, data-driven decisions that reduce downtime and protect throughput.
For the Business: It significantly de-risked the broader digital ecosystem by proving that the hardest part of the vision, capturing clean, compute-ready human knowledge in rugged field environments, could successfully be achieved through design.
My Role
I led the research and product-definition workstream: observing plant operators in their natural environment, framing the systemic problem beneath the initial brief, and translating those insights into a cohesive product vision, prioritized feature set, and actionable concept.
The fieldwork revealed the true bottleneck was human and contextual. Solving this foundational blocker was the catalyst the entire downstream strategy depended on.
